Historic letters of Shaheed Udham Singh preserved at GNDU’s Bhai Gurdas Library

Amritsar, July 30, 2025: The Bhai Gurdas Library at Guru Nanak Dev University is home to 19 historic letters penned by India’s legendary revolutionary and freedom fighter, Shaheed Udham Singh. These letters, as relevant today as they were 90 years ago, stand as a testament to his life, thoughts, and sacrifices.

According to the book Udham Singh’s Letters, published by Guru Nanak Dev University, these letters were donated in 1972 to the university through the efforts of Mr. M.S. Gill, IAS, reflecting his deep connection with the institution. The letters were originally preserved by Udham Singh’s friend, S. Shiv Singh Jauhal, in London.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Karamjeet Singh highlighted that these letters not only reflect Udham Singh’s revolutionary ideology but also serve as a source of inspiration for the younger generation, igniting their spirit of patriotism and struggle. The letters have been carefully preserved in a special section of the university library for decades.

Dr. Karamjeet Singh further stated that the university is committed to ensuring that historical documents and the legacy of the freedom struggle reach the new generation. He revealed that GNDU has initiated a digital archive and documentary project to preserve the documents of Udham Singh and other revolutionaries in digital format.
