Digital revolution accelerates in Jammu and Kashmir: High-speed internet to reach 2,234 schools and 1,138 health centers

A major step has been taken towards strengthening digital connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. Secretary of the Information Technology Department, Piyush Singla, stated that broadband network is being rapidly expanded in the state under the ambitious Central Government project. He gave this information at the 10th State Broadband Committee meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo.

According to an official spokesperson, the project is being implemented under the Central Government’s Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), with BSNL appointed as the implementing agency. The Secretary informed that land allocation has been completed at 775 identified sites, while power supply has also been ensured at most locations with the support of the Public Distribution System (PDD).

The Chief Secretary specifically directed to expedite work on the 269 sites to be completed by March 31st, and to expedite the necessary approvals for the remaining sites.

The meeting also reviewed the progress of the Border Village Saturation Plan, covering 1,421 border villages. Discussing preparations for 5G services, the IT Department provided information on steps taken for right-of-way facilities, 5G street furniture mapping, and capacity building. A one-day workshop on 5G was also organized in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications in November 2025.

Reviewing the progress of the Samridh Gram Panchayat pilot project, the Chief Secretary stated that digitally empowering rural institutions through FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connectivity is the need of the hour. Under this project, 2,234 schools and 1,138 primary health centers in rural areas are being connected to high-speed internet.

He said that strong digital connectivity at the grassroots level will improve governance and give new direction to education, health services and rural entrepreneurship.
