Jammu and Kashmir ready for Census 2027, door-to-door houselisting operation to begin on June 1

Formal preparations have begun for the upcoming 2027 Census in Jammu and Kashmir. A door-to-door Houselisting (HLO) operation will be conducted across the Union Territory from June 1 to June 30. Significantly, this time the census will be completely digital, and citizens will be given the option of self-enumeration 15 days in advance.

A meeting of the Union Territory-Level Census Coordination Committee was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo. The meeting discussed the entire action plan, timeline, and administrative preparations for the census in detail. The government is expected to issue a notification in this regard by January 31.

At the meeting, Census Director Amit Sharma presented the outline and key features of Census 2027. He stated that this will be India’s first fully digital census, collecting data through mobile and online platforms. In addition to providing citizens with the convenience of self-enumeration, new initiatives like caste census will also be part of this process.

The administration will ensure that the self-enumeration process is simple, accessible, and error-free. Technical assistants and charge officers will provide necessary guidance to citizens. A detailed timeline has also been established for training, self-enumeration, house listing, and the subsequent census.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo directed all Deputy Commissioners to establish census cells at the district level, enroll relevant officials in a timely manner, and complete the identification of trainers, supervisors, and enumeration officers expeditiously. He emphasized close coordination between the administration and the Census Directorate, stating that the government will provide all possible support for the successful completion of the census.

The administration believes that a digital census will not only speed up the process and make it transparent, but will also provide accurate and reliable data for policymaking and development planning.
