A fresh controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir following the funeral of the former Jamaat-e-Islami chief, Sheikh Ghulam Hassan. PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti has launched a scathing attack on the administration regarding the FIRs registered against individuals who attended the funeral to express their sentiments. Terming this action as “needlessly targeting people,” she demanded an immediate halt to the proceedings.
Speaking to journalists in Kulgam on Tuesday, Mehbooba Mufti stated that people were grief-stricken over Sheikh Ghulam Hassan’s demise and, swept up by their emotions, were merely voicing their feelings. She asserted that it is unjust to label someone’s emotional reaction as “anti-national.”
Mehbooba Mufti maintained that registering FIRs against people solely for expressing grief and condolences is wrong. She appealed to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene and put an end to this action.
The PDP chief also visited the bereaved family in the Tangrigam area of Kulgam to offer her condolences. She emphasized that the administration must demonstrate sensitivity in such matters to ensure that the atmosphere in the Valley does not become further strained.
Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti also expressed concern over another incident. She alleged that certain army personnel reportedly pushed a young man toward a house where a wild bear was trapped. The youth sustained severe injuries in this incident and is currently battling for his life in the hospital.
She stated that while she respects the Army, if a civilian’s life has been endangered due to someone’s negligence, accountability must be established, and action must be taken against the culprits.
Following these events, the political climate in the Valley has heated up. Opposition parties are questioning the administration’s actions, while security agencies maintain that their measures are aimed at upholding law and order. All eyes are now fixed on the administration’s next move regarding this entire matter.
