Machel Yatra Goes High-Tech: RFID Cards Mandatory for Devotee Safety

JNM Journalist Hardeep Jamwal, Jammu

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has initiated preparations to make this year’s Shri Machel Mata Yatra safer, more organized, and technologically robust than ever before. Following the natural calamity that struck the pilgrimage route last year, the administration has accorded top priority to security arrangements this time around. In line with this effort, an online and RFID-based registration system is now being implemented for devotees—mirroring the system currently in place for the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra.

Officials from all departments associated with the pilgrimage participated in a high-level meeting held in Srinagar, presided over by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo. The meeting featured detailed discussions on measures to ensure the Yatra remains safe, smooth, and well-organized. The administration made it clear that, having learned lessons from last year’s tragedy, absolutely no laxity will be tolerated this time.

Real-Time Monitoring to Enhance Security

This year, every devotee undertaking the pilgrimage will be issued an RFID card. This will enable the administration to track the real-time location and movement of pilgrims. Consequently, relief and rescue operations can be executed with greater speed and efficiency in the event of any emergency. Furthermore, the online registration system will streamline overall pilgrimage management.

Constant Vigil on Weather Conditions

Automatic rain gauges and automated weather stations will be installed along the pilgrimage route to provide immediate updates on changing weather patterns. The administration has issued specific directives for the close monitoring of landslide-prone zones and other vulnerable areas. In the event of adverse weather conditions, timely alerts will be issued to the devotees.

Special Focus on Medical Care and Disaster Management

Medical camps, ambulance services, first-aid centers, and emergency response teams will be strategically deployed along the pilgrimage route. Directives have also been issued to ensure the adequate availability of healthcare personnel and essential medicines. The administration affirmed that comprehensive preparations are underway to safeguard the devotees and effectively tackle any potential disaster.

Special Arrangements for Accommodation and Transport

Ramesh Kumar, the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, informed that accommodation facilities—including government guest houses, private lodges, homestays, and tented camps—are being significantly expanded at various locations along the route, including Kishtwar, Gulabgarh, Chashoti, and Machel. A special ‘Tent City’ will also be established in Machail.
Meanwhile, to enhance traffic management, a specialized parking and traffic plan is being formulated to ensure that the movement of emergency vehicles remains unimpeded.

Administration Claims: A Safe and Smooth Pilgrimage

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo has directed officials to ensure that all departments work in close coordination to prevent any inconvenience to pilgrims during the journey. The administration asserts that every necessary step is being taken to make this year’s Machail Yatra a safe, modern, and superior experience.
