Jammu: During a session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Bani MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh highlighted the crucial role of media in society, stating that it serves as a strong pillar in bringing important issues before the public.
He said that in many areas and situations where people or public representatives cannot reach directly, the media acts as a vital bridge. He also expressed gratitude towards responsible media professionals for their contribution.
However, Dr. Singh raised concerns over the growing number of individuals entering the media space without proper qualifications or experience. He alleged that some so-called media persons misuse microphones and digital platforms to settle personal grudges or engage in blackmail, thereby harming the reputation of individuals.
He further pointed out that the biggest issue is the lack of accountability, as such individuals often operate without any oversight. He said there is no clear information available regarding how many media outlets are officially registered in the region.
In this regard, he urged the Information Department to release an official list of registered media channels and portals, so that there is clarity on which platforms are legitimate and trustworthy for coordination.
Dr. Singh also emphasized that society and political groups must take responsibility, as people often promote content based on their preferences, indirectly encouraging irresponsible media practices.
He stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability in the media, especially in the current scenario.
