Haryana man, 26, shot dead in US after stopping another from urinating in public

A 26-year-old man from Haryana was shot dead in the US state of California after he tried to stop another man from urinating in public, his family said.

The victim, Kapil of Barah Kala village in Jind district, collapsed on the street after being shot and was later declared dead at a hospital, according to police accounts relayed to his relatives.

Kapil had moved to the US in 2022 through the “Dunki” route, spending about Rs 45 lakh ($54,000) to secure his passage. His family said he was their only heir and had been working to support them from abroad.

“He simply asked a man not to urinate in the open, and for that, he was shot,” a grieving relative told local reporters.

Witnesses alerted police immediately after the shooting. Kapil was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead during treatment.

Born on May 22, 2000, Kapil came from a farming family that is now struggling to repatriate his body to India. The family, who spent their savings to send him abroad, says they face a financial crisis in arranging his return.

Authorities in the US have not released the name of the suspect or said whether any arrests have been made.
