A significant development has emerged in Jammu and Kashmir politics, with the Justice and Development Front (JDF), an organization formed by former leaders of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami, receiving official recognition from the Election Commission. This decision is being seen as a sign of a major shift in the political climate of the Valley.
JDF has clarified that it will conduct its political and social activities within the framework of the Indian Constitution. The organization maintains that the Kashmir issue should be resolved at the level of India and Pakistan.
Political analysts believe that the recognition of JDF could change the equations in the upcoming elections. Especially in areas where Jamaat-e-Islami previously held influence, this new platform could reactivate old cadres.
It is worth noting that Jamaat-e-Islami was banned in 2019, after which its activities virtually ceased and its workers were under pressure.
After the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, its former leaders, instead of directly contesting elections, formed a new political platform, the Justice and Development Front (JDF), through which they participated in the 2024 assembly elections.
The JDF made its presence felt in the 2024 assembly elections. Although it failed to win any seats, its candidates received significant votes in areas like Kulgam and Pulwama, indicating its strong base.
JDF leaders say that they were previously unable to obtain recognition due to technical reasons, but now all formalities have been completed. With recognition, the organization will be able to open bank accounts, obtain permission for rallies and meetings, and expand its organization on a larger scale.
JDF patron Ghulam Qadir Lone says that his organization is not limited to contesting elections, but rather aims to usher in a new political beginning in Jammu and Kashmir. Political experts believe that it will be interesting to see whether the JDF fully establishes itself in mainstream politics in the future.
At present, this decision has definitely created a new stir in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir and its far-reaching effects can be seen in the times to come.
