Kashmir’s ‘Gucchi’ Successfully Grown in a Greenhouse, World’s Costliest Mushroom Brings New HopeSrinagar

Scientists at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) have achieved a historic milestone by successfully cultivating Kashmir’s famous and one of the world’s most expensive mushrooms, ‘Gucchi’ (Morel), for the first time in a controlled greenhouse environment.
Until now, Gucchi mushrooms grew only in the wild under natural conditions, especially in mountainous regions after the snow melts. Due to their limited availability and the difficulty involved in harvesting them, their prices in international markets often reach thousands of dollars per kilogram.
After years of research, scientists at SKUAST-K have managed to understand the life cycle and environmental requirements of this rare mushroom and created an artificial environment in which it can thrive inside a greenhouse. This achievement is not only a major scientific success but also has the potential to be a game-changer for farmers and the local economy.
According to experts, the successful commercial use of this technology could significantly boost farmers’ incomes in Kashmir. Dependence on forests for Gucchi collection will decrease, and it can now be cultivated in a controlled manner on a larger scale.
Agriculture experts believe that this step could give Kashmir global recognition in mushroom production and open new avenues for exports.
Why is Gucchi special?
Extremely rare in nature
Rich in nutrition and medicinal properties
High demand in international markets
Price: Thousands to lakhs of rupees per kilogram
This achievement by SKUAST-K is not just a victory for science, but also marks the beginning of an economic revolution for the farmers of Kashmir
