Emphasises UT Admin’s commitment to development of Ladakh

Nubra (Leh), September 10: Nubra Valley has the potential to emerge as one of India’s premier tourist destinations owing to its breathtaking landscapes, diverse culture, and unique natural heritage. The Government of India and the UT Administration are committed to accelerating Ladakh’s development journey with a focused push on tourism, infrastructure, and sustainable growth.

This was stated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, while addressing a public durbar at the SDM Conference Hall, Disket, on the first day of his maiden three-day visit to the Nubra sub-division.

The meeting was attended by Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, Ghulam Mehdi; Councillor Hunder, Kunzang Lotos; Councillor Panamik, Tsering Sandup; Councillor Tiger, Rigzin Lhundup; SDM Nubra, Mukul Beniwal; and ADDC Leh, Sonam Norbu.

Showcasing Nubra Valley as a truly distinctive destination—where cold desert sand dunes meet snow-capped peaks, where visitors can ride double-humped Bactrian camels, explore Buddhist treasures like the Diskit Monastery, and experience the rich Balti culture in villages like Turtuk—the Lt Governor underlined the Administration’s resolve to improve tourism facilities and strengthen connectivity in line with the vision of the Government of India for the holistic development of Ladakh.

He highlighted key initiatives already underway, including the upcoming Phyang–Hunder Transmission Line to ensure uninterrupted power supply for Nubra, the civil airport at Thoise which will directly link the valley with the rest of the country, opening of new tourist circuits, and upgradation of road infrastructure to improve accessibility.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by Ladakh’s short working season due to extreme winters and heavy snowfall, the Lt Governor assured that the Administration is determined to provide every region with reliable road connectivity, continuous power, 4G mobile services, as well as improved healthcare and educational facilities. He credited the proactive support of the Government of India and the dedication of UT officials for driving these efforts forward.

The Lt Governor further reiterated the Administration’s commitment to addressing key issues, including the rationalisation of wildlife sanctuary boundaries, fast-tracking transmission line projects, and operationalising the Thoise civil airport at the earliest.

Earlier, EC Mehdi and Councillors from different constituencies from Nubra informed the Lt Governor about various issues in their constituencies related to power supply, telecommunication network, connectivity, healthcare facilities, and the requirement of multipurpose hall.

The Lt Governor also visited Disket Monastery and the 106 ft tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, where he sought blessings for the development of Ladakh. He also visited the Hunder Sand Dunes, where he also took a ride on the double-humped Bactrian camel. He also listened to the grievances of the monks at Disket Monastery and owners of the Bactrian camels.

The Lt Governor assured the public and stakeholders that all genuine concerns raised would be addressed on priority, reaffirming the Administration’s commitment to balanced development of Nubra. He said that every effort will be made to strengthen basic amenities, promote sustainable tourism, and create better livelihood opportunities for the local population, so that Nubra emerges not only as a leading tourist hub but also as a model of inclusive growth in Ladakh.
