Major blow to separatist network, Asiya Andrabi sentenced to life imprisonment

JNM journalist Hardeep Jamwal, Jammu

Kashmiri separatist leader Asiya Andrabi has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a serious case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The court clearly stated in its verdict that the accused’s activities were against the unity and integrity of the country.

During the trial, the prosecution stated that Andrabi had long been accused of promoting anti-India activities, making inflammatory speeches, and organizing separatist ideology. The investigating agency, the National Investigation Agency, had claimed in its charge sheet that she maintained contacts with banned organizations and played an active role in anti-national conspiracies.

The court, after considering all the evidence and witnesses, found that the accused’s role was not limited to ideological support, but rather that she was actively involved in activities that posed a serious threat to national security. Based on this, she was sentenced to life imprisonment.

It is noteworthy that Andrabi’s affiliated organization, Dukhtaran-e-Millat, has already been banned under the UAPA. According to the agency, attempts were made through this organization to connect women with the separatist agenda.

This decision is being seen as a major success for security agencies and a strong crackdown on separatist networks. Experts believe that this decision will play a significant role in curbing anti-national activities in the future.

While the NCB has attributed the death to two cardiac events (heart attacks), the deceased’s family has made serious allegations, alleging that Jaswinder Singh was severely beaten while in custody.According to the NCB, Jaswinder Singh was detained in Jammu on March 3 for questioning in a drug trafficking case. On March 12, he was formally arrested in a case of trafficking tramadol and commercial quantities of heroin, after which his detention was repeatedly extended. The agency stated that on March 19, he was taken to Amritsar for further investigation. During interrogation, Jaswinder Singh complained of chest pains, following which he was immediately admitted to the hospital. He suffered two cardiac arrests there and died on the morning of March 20.The NCB maintains that all legal protocols set forth by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Supreme Court are being followed in the case. The post-mortem and investigation are underway in the presence of judicial and executive magistrates. On the other hand, Jaswinder Singh’s family has rejected the agency’s claims, alleging that he was assaulted during custody, which worsened his condition.
