Major change in Ujjwala Yojana, number of subsidized LPG cylinders reduced from 9 to 4

JNM || Journalist Shriya Gupta

The central government has reduced the number of subsidized cooking gas cylinders available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Now, Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries will receive a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder on only four LPG cylinders annually, instead of nine. The government says this decision was taken keeping in mind the average gas consumption of beneficiaries.

According to information, initially, beneficiaries were given a subsidy on 12 cylinders, which was reduced to nine in 2025. Now, this has been further reduced to four cylinders per year. However, the ₹300 subsidy per cylinder will continue.

Meanwhile, domestic LPG cylinder prices have also recently been increased by ₹29. A 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinder in Delhi now costs ₹942. After the subsidy is received by Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries, this cylinder will effectively be available for ₹642.

According to officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, this change has been made in line with the average annual consumption of Ujjwala families. Meanwhile, opposition parties and several social organizations have expressed concern over this decision, saying it could impose an additional financial burden on poor families.

More than 10 crore families across the country are benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which aims to provide clean fuel to women from poor families.
