After remaining closed for several days due to heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, the historic Mughal Road has finally reopened for vehicular traffic. The opening of this vital road has restored direct connectivity between Rajouri and Poonch districts and the Kashmir Valley, bringing a sigh of relief to local residents.
The Mughal Road, which connects Shopian to Rajouri-Poonch, is frequently closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. Traffic had been halted since January due to frozen snow and slippery conditions on the road.
For the past several days, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams have been continuously clearing snow. Heavy machinery was used to clear both sides of the road, after which the administration completed safety checks and decided to reopen it for traffic.
According to officials, the opening of the road will not only facilitate the movement of people but also facilitate trade and the smooth flow of essential goods. This route is an important alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and significantly reduces travel distances.
However, the administration has advised travelers to exercise caution, as partial snow remains in the higher reaches, especially near Peer Ki Gali, and the road may become slippery in the evening.
Locals say that the opening of the Mughal Road will reduce their travel time to the Kashmir Valley and provide relief from a long-standing problem.
