The alcohol-related politics in Jammu and Kashmir has once again intensified. On Monday, a list of 33 private member bills was introduced in the Assembly, five of which directly seek to ban or strictly regulate the sale, consumption, and related activities. These proposals, introduced by MLAs from various political parties, have brought the issue to the forefront.
The most significant of these bills is a proposal to impose a complete ban on alcohol throughout Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar has demanded a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol throughout the Union Territory. Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed Pardesi has proposed a separate proposal to ban alcohol in the Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.
PDP MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz has taken an even tougher stance, introducing a comprehensive bill to impose a complete ban on the advertising, manufacture, purchase, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Additionally, Sheikh Khurshid Ahmed has demanded a complete ban in the Kashmir Valley, citing social and religious reasons.
On the other hand, BJP MLA Pawan Gupta has proposed an amendment to the Jammu and Kashmir Excise Act, suggesting a policy change rather than a complete ban.
It is noteworthy that all these bills have not yet been discussed, but they are likely to be debated in the upcoming assembly sessions. They will first be allowed to be introduced, after which they may be referred to committees or brought up directly for discussion.
Experts believe that the introduction of several bills related to the ban on alcohol by different parties in a single day indicates that the issue is becoming increasingly serious at both the political and social levels. In particular, the Kashmir Valley has long been a demand for stricter control or a complete ban on alcohol.
All eyes are now focused on the upcoming assembly session—whether a complete ban on alcohol will truly be imposed in Jammu and Kashmir, or will this issue remain a mere political debate.
