Voter list update in Jammu and Kashmir: 1.60 lakh new voters added, total number crosses 87.42 lakh

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed massive changes during the recent Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the annual electoral rolls. Over 1.60 lakh new voters were added to the list during this process, bringing the total number of voters in the Union Territory to over 87.42 lakh.

According to official data, while 160,974 new voters were registered in this revision, 67,690 names were removed from the list. In addition, over 2.29 lakh entries were also corrected. Duplicate and transferred voters accounted for the majority of the deleted names.

In terms of district-wise figures, Jammu district led the way, with a total of 11,89,555 voters registered, the highest in the entire Union Territory. Srinagar recorded 753,222 voters, while Baramulla recorded 720,500.
Srinagar district topped the list of new voter registrations, with 30,077 new voters added. This was followed by Jammu with 16,855 and Baramulla with 11,854. Jammu (10,430), Budgam (7,762), and Anantnag (5,241) districts were the most prominent in the deletion cases.

Considering the total voter turnout, the state now has 4,465,161 male, 4,277,568 female, and 149 third-gender voters.

According to officials, continuous efforts are being made to ensure 100% voter registration. Awareness campaigns are being conducted under the Election Commission of India’s “Sweep” program, with special emphasis on engaging youth, women, and marginalized groups.
Electoral Literacy Clubs are being organized in schools and colleges, election schools are being held at polling stations, and door-to-door voter registration campaigns are being conducted by booth-level officers. Awareness campaigns are also being created through videos in local languages, SMS alerts, radio messages, TV scrolls, and billboards and posters in public places.

On Monday, thousands of people took to the streets in Leh and Kargil demanding statehood and the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. A large number of youth, women, and elderly people participated in the peaceful rally.The rally began at around 11:15 am from Singhe Namgyal Chowk in Leh. Carrying posters and banners, people chanted slogans such as “Give justice to Ladakh,” “Give statehood,” and “Implement constitutional safeguards.” During the rally, protesters attempted to convey their demands to the government in a peaceful manner.The rally was organized under the leadership of the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. Leaders say that the Home Ministry’s High Power Committee on Ladakh issues has not convened a meeting since February 4th, leading to growing public resentment.The rally was also attended by the families of four people killed in the violent protests of September 2025. Many protesters carried photographs of the deceased and demanded justice. A large number of women also participated, raising their voices for Ladakh’s rights.The rally reached Leh’s Polo Ground around 1 p.m., where speakers addressed the crowd. They stated that the judicial inquiry into the deaths in the September 2025 incident is extremely slow, leading to growing public discontent. They demanded the central government take a swift decision and provide justice to the people of Ladakh.Tight security arrangements were in place in the district during the rally. The administration erected barricades at several locations and deployed additional police forces. Mukesh Singh, Director General of Ladakh Police, personally visited the rally site to review the security arrangements.Both the administration and the organizers ensured that the demonstration remained completely peaceful and that no violence or provocation occurred. Consequently, the rally concluded peacefully around 1:30 pm.This demonstration in Ladakh has once again made it clear that the people of Ladakh will continue to raise their voices demanding statehood and constitutional protections. All eyes are now on the central government’s next steps.
