JDA Bulldozer Action Near Railway Station; Government Land Worth ₹10 Crore Cleared of Encroachment

JNM Correspondent Hardeep Jamwal, Jammu

The Jammu Development Authority (JDA), in collaboration with the district administration and police, carried out a major anti-encroachment drive near the Jammu Railway Station early Wednesday morning. During the operation, approximately four kanals of government land situated behind Mangal Market and Vaishnavi Dham were cleared of illegal encroachments. According to officials, the estimated market value of this land is around ₹10 crore.
The operation began around 5:00 AM, with the JDA team demolishing over 30 illegal kiosks, dhabas (roadside eateries), and other commercial structures. It is reported that businesses had been operating on this land through illegal occupation for several years.
According to reports, the matter regarding this land had been pending in court for a long time. The encroachers had even approached the High Court to seek legal recognition for their occupation. However, during the inquiry, the concerned authority found the occupation to be entirely illegal, paving the way for the action to be taken in accordance with court directives.
The drive, conducted under the instructions of JDA Vice Chairman Dr. Rupesh Kumar, was led by Director (Land Management) Garbi Rashid. A heavy police force was deployed during the operation. Although some individuals attempted to register a protest, the administration successfully completed the drive without any hindrance.
On the other hand, the affected kiosk and dhaba operators claim they had been conducting business there for nearly 13 years. According to them, they were previously relocated from the main roadside and granted permission to operate at this specific site. Now, following this action, many families are facing a livelihood crisis.
After the operation, JDA officials clarified that no form of illegal construction or encroachment on government land would be tolerated. They appealed to the public to cooperate in safeguarding public property and to refrain from undertaking construction work without proper authorization.
