Tremors from a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake—striking around 7:05 PM on Saturday at a location approximately 81 kilometers from the Kalafgan region of Afghanistan—were felt across several parts of North India, including Jammu & Kashmir. The earthquake’s epicenter was near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, and it originated at a depth of 192 kilometers. Due to this significant depth, the tremors were felt over a wide area.
The impact of the earthquake extended to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and various parts of India. In India, residents of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR felt the ground shake for a few seconds.
As tremors were felt in areas such as Srinagar, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Jammu, people rushed out of their homes, offices, and other buildings as a precautionary measure. Residents in Delhi-NCR and Gurugram also experienced the tremors, causing a brief moment of panic.
However, it is a relief that, at the time of writing, there have been no reports of casualties or damage to property in Jammu & Kashmir or other affected regions of the country. Relevant administrative bodies and disaster management agencies are continuously monitoring the situation.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) has also confirmed the earthquake. Experts state that because the epicenter was at a considerable depth, the tremors were felt over a vast area, yet the damage on the surface remained relatively minimal.
The administration has urged the public not to pay heed to rumors and to follow the instructions of local authorities in the event of any emergency.
