Jammu, October 13 (JNM Bureau):
Jammu and Kashmir politics witnessed a major political explosion on Monday when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed the nominations of its three candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections.
Satpal Sharma, Ali Mohammad Mir, and Rakesh Mahajan are among those who filed their nominations. This move by the BJP is being seen as a display of its political strength but also widens the rift within the opposition camp.
BJP’s confidence, opposition’s confusion
The nominations were filed before Assembly Secretary and Returning Officer Manoj Kumar Pandit. Party state president Ravinder Raina said, “The BJP is the true voice of Jammu and Kashmir today, and we will further strengthen our presence in Parliament.”
According to party sources, the BJP aims to capture all three seats—and a strategy has been developed from Delhi to Srinagar.
Tensions Erupt in the NC-Congress Alliance
Meanwhile, an open dispute has emerged between the National Conference (NC) and the Congress, part of the opposition alliance India Bloc, over seat-sharing.
The Congress has publicly stated that it has been assigned an “unsafe seat,” and therefore will not contest the election. The party’s state in-charge stated, “We cannot devote resources to a seat where defeat is already certain.”
Rift in the Alliance, Indirect Benefit to the BJP
Political experts believe that this open dispute between the Congress and NC could prove to be an “unexpected bonus” for the BJP.
If the NC contests alone, the opposition vote is bound to be divided—which could directly benefit the BJP.
Election Schedule and Prospects
Voting for four Rajya Sabha seats will be held on October 24. The Election Commission has issued three notifications—separate voting for the first two seats and simultaneous voting for the remaining two.
Given the BJP’s numerical advantage in the Assembly and the support of independent MLAs, the party is considered to have the upper hand this time.
Political Analysis
If the BJP wins even two of the three seats, it will be considered its biggest parliamentary success in the Valley since 2019.
On the other hand, this period of distrust within the NC-Congress party raises serious questions about the concept of opposition unity.
According to experts, the impact of this election will not be limited to the Rajya Sabha but will also impact the strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections.
