Katra Bandh: Sangharsh Samiti protests against ropeway project, disrupts public lifeKatra, February 18:The holy city of Katra remained completely closed on Wednesday following the call of the Sangharsh Samiti to protest the Tarakot-Sanjhi Chhat ropeway project. The widespread impact of the bandh was felt from early morning. While the pilgrimage route resounded with chants of Mata Vaishno Devi, the town of Katra was abuzz with protests and slogans against the ropeway project. The bandh called by the Sangharsh Samiti received support from various social organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, horse-operation unions, palanquin and porter associations. The main market, hotels, dhabas, restaurants, and shops remained closed, bringing normal activity in the city to a standstill.Protesters strongly protested the proposed ropeway project from Tarakot to Sanjhi Chhat, calling it a threat to local employment. They said the ropeway’s opening would impact the livelihoods of thousands of families who serve pilgrims with horses, palanquins, and porters. Traders also fear that the local markets will lose their charm if pilgrims travel directly to the top via the ropeway.

Due to the shutdown, horse and palanquin services were unavailable on the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra route, forcing many pilgrims to travel on foot. However, the pilgrimage officially continued, and pilgrims continued to proceed towards the temple.

Sangharsh Samiti leaders warned that if the ropeway project is not reconsidered, the agitation will be intensified. They have demanded that the administration and the Shrine Board initiate dialogue on the project while keeping local interests in mind.

Meanwhile, the administration is monitoring the situation to ensure law and order is maintained and pilgrims face minimal inconvenience. While the one-day shutdown is reported to have concluded peacefully, there are indications that the controversy over the ropeway will continue.
