Signs of a major reshuffle in the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet

Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape could soon witness a major shift. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has hinted at a cabinet expansion and reshuffle, sparking intense discussions within political circles. It is believed that the government is now preparing to induct new faces into the cabinet to foster better coordination between the organization and the administration.

According to sources, the National Conference leadership is gathering feedback at the district and block levels. This includes assessing the work ethic, public engagement, and organizational influence of MLAs from their respective areas. A final decision on the names of new ministers may be made based on this.

Under the current constitutional framework, a nine-member cabinet, including the Chief Minister, can be formed in Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah serves with five cabinet ministers, leaving room for the addition of three more. There has been no cabinet expansion or reshuffle since the formation of the government in October 2024.

According to political sources, the proposed expansion will focus on maintaining a balance between the two regions of Jammu and Kashmir. There is talk that one new face each from South Kashmir, Srinagar, and North Kashmir could be included in the cabinet. Internal discussions are also underway regarding potential candidates and portfolio allocation.

Meanwhile, speculation about the Congress’s inclusion in the cabinet has also been put to rest. According to sources, the Congress has already declined to join the government. Therefore, the cabinet expansion is likely to be based solely on the National Conference and its allies.

Meanwhile, party president Farooq Abdullah has currently denied any discussions about cabinet expansion. However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while speaking to reporters in Tangmarg, said, “Everyone will be informed at the appropriate time,” which has further fueled political speculation.

Political analysts believe that the government may take this step in the near future to improve administrative performance and strengthen regional representation. All eyes are now on the Chief Minister’s next decision.
