Heatwave Havoc in Scorching Jammu; Heat Intensifies in the Valley Too; Warning Issued for Evening Storms and Rain

JNM Journalist Hardeep Jamwal, Jammu

The heat of May has compounded the difficulties faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu division is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave and scorching winds, while temperatures in the Kashmir Valley also continue to hover consistently above normal levels. The situation is such that gusts of hot air can be felt on the streets right from the morning hours, and by the time afternoon arrives, an eerie silence begins to descend upon the markets.

On Wednesday, the temperature in Jammu city soared above 42 degrees Celsius. Due to the severe heat persisting for several consecutive days, it has become difficult for people to venture out of their homes. Hot winds have left residents distressed in Katra, Samba, and the surrounding plains as well. On the other hand, the heat has gained momentum in Kashmir too; temperatures in several areas, including Srinagar, were recorded to be several degrees higher than normal.

Offering a glimmer of relief, the Meteorological Department has stated that the weather is likely to take a sudden turn during the afternoon of May 21. There is a possibility of strong winds, thunderstorms accompanied by rain, and even hailstorms in certain areas across various parts of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the department, wind speeds could reach up to 40 to 50 kilometers per hour; consequently, people have been advised to remain vigilant.

Weather experts predict that over the next few days, the region will experience a mixed pattern of heat and shifting weather conditions. Mornings are expected to remain clear, but during the afternoon and evening hours, several areas may witness light rainfall or overcast skies. However, the heat is likely to intensify once again during the final week of the month.

The administration has appealed to the public to avoid venturing outdoors unnecessarily during the afternoon hours, to ensure they drink adequate amounts of water, and to refrain from standing under trees or near electric poles during adverse weather conditions.
