Two sisters from the Fateh Kadal area of Srinagar—Iram Gulzar and Rabia Gulzar—have made unique history by giving a brand-new form to Rajma. The duo has developed the world’s first Rajma jam and Rajma chocolate. News of this unique innovation has now spread not only across the country but has also reached international shores. Several foreign companies have also expressed interest in their products.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Rajma is considered an integral part of the traditional diet. It is typically consumed with rice; however, Iram and Rabia have given this humble Rajma a new identity by transforming it into a nutritious and delicious range of products. The two sisters are working by blending the fields of agriculture, food science, and creative thinking.
Iram Gulzar holds a Master’s degree in Food Science from the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir. She has also conducted extensive research on Rajma. After a prolonged period of study and experimentation, she successfully developed these unique products. They are entirely organic; for sweetness, honey has been used instead of sugar, and beetroot has been utilized to provide natural coloring.
Rabia Gulzar holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and focuses on the design and presentation aspects of their products. She played a pivotal role in giving the Rajma chocolate its attractive and appealing appearance.
Their products received an overwhelming response at a recently held international buyer-seller meet. Two to three international companies have already shown interest in them. However, the sisters state that their primary priority is to first establish a strong foothold in the Indian market.
Recently, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, also visited their stall during the Gongul Festival; he tasted the Rajma chocolate and lauded this innovative endeavor.
The sisters have launched their brand under the name “Gulshamim,” named in honor of their parents. This name was coined by combining the names of their father, Gulzar, and their mother, Shamim.
Iram Gulzar has also received several national and international accolades for her innovation and contributions. These include the 100 Women Honour, the Global Heritage Honour, and the Super Woman Honour.
This initiative—which transforms traditional food items like Rajma into modern and nutritious products—is becoming a new source of inspiration for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
