A Heartwarming Encounter in Mandi

MANDI: On September 9, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Gaggal Airport in Kangra to meet survivors of the devastating flashfloods that impacted Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba districts. Among those he met was a young girl named Nitika from Talwara village, who has become a symbol of resilience in Himachal Pradesh.
During the catastrophic events of June 30, 2025, a cloudburst led to severe flashfloods in Talwara, tragically claiming the lives of Nitika’s parents and grandmother. While her father, Ramesh Kumar, was later found deceased, her mother, Radha, and grandmother, Purnu Devi, remain missing.
On that fateful night, Nitika’s cries broke the silence of devastation, prompting villagers to uncover the tragedy. The following day, her father’s body was discovered, highlighting the extent of the family’s loss.
Today marked another significant moment for Nitika as Prime Minister Modi embraced her, showering her with affection and blessings. Accompanied by her aunt Tara Devi, who has taken on the responsibility of raising her, Nitika became the focal point of the meeting.
Following the flashfloods, Nitika’s survival story resonated with many, inspiring hope throughout the state. Former Gohar SDM Smritika Negi, who first rescued the child from the wreckage, referred to her as a ‘super girl’ and initiated a public appeal for support. In response, the administration established two bank accounts in Nitika’s name to facilitate contributions for her future. Citizens, officials, and community members rallied together, dubbing her the ‘child of hope.’
Amid the tragedy that claimed numerous lives, the sight of this young girl emerging unscathed from the ruins was indeed miraculous. As Prime Minister Modi held her today, Nitika’s journey from sorrow to becoming a beacon of resilience took a new turn.
Another poignant story from the Mandi tragedy is that of Krishna Devi, who was also brought to Kangra to meet the Prime Minister. Krishna, the widow of Kishan Singh, resides at 178/3 Jail Road, Tungl Colony, Mandi. Her family suffered immensely during the flashfloods on July 29, 2025, which resulted in the loss of four family members. Tragically, three of them perished, while one sustained serious injuries.
The deceased included her son Balbir Singh (47), daughter-in-law Sapna (48), and grandson Amanpreet Singh (25). The only survivor, her elder son Darshan Singh (55), is currently receiving treatment for severe leg injuries.
The family is grappling with profound grief, struggling to come to terms with their loss. The district administration has pledged ongoing medical and financial assistance, while the Prime Minister expressed his condolences and assured that the government stands in solidarity with the victims during this challenging time.
