CBI arrests airport authority manager for diverting Rs 232 crore to own account

The CBI arrested a senior manager of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for allegedly siphoning off about Rs 232 crore into his personal bank account, officials said Tuesday.

The arrest followed a complaint from the AAI alleging that Senior Manager Rahul Vijay, while serving at Dehradun airport, engaged in a “systematic scheme of fraud and embezzlement” by manipulating official and electronic records.

According to the CBI, between 2019-20 and 2022-23, Vijay allegedly created duplicate and fictitious assets and inflated their values, sometimes by simply adding zeros to entries, to evade detection.

The manipulated records allegedly enabled him to divert about Rs 232 crore of public funds to his personal accounts, the probe agency said.

Preliminary analysis of transactions suggested that Vijay later transferred the money into trading accounts, it said.

On August 28, CBI teams carried out searches at Vijay’s official and residential premises in Jaipur. Incriminating documents related to immovable properties and valuable securities were recovered during the raid.

The agency registered a case of criminal misconduct and misappropriation of public funds against the official.

At the time of his arrest, Vijay was posted at the Jaipur airport as the AAI’s finance in-charge, as per his LinkedIn page. He also had a stint at Coal India.
