Rajouri, Sept 11: The security of District Jail Rajouri, located at Dhangri, has come under sharp scrutiny after three mobile phones were recovered from inside the premises during an extensive search operation.
The recovery has raised alarm bells among intelligence agencies, which have flagged the incident as a “serious concern,” calling for an immediate review of the jail’s jamming system and security cover.
According to sources, the joint search was carried out under the supervision of the jail administration. The discovery of the phones has sparked questions over the security of the facility, which houses not only hardened criminals but also several terrorists and overground workers (OGWs).
Intelligence officials suspect the phones were either smuggled inside or thrown over the boundary wall from a nearby road that overlooks the jail premises. “The jail is equipped with digital jammers, and it is claimed that no mobile network functions inside. However, the recovery of phones suggests the system may have been compromised,” an official source said.
The Badhoon-Dhangri road, which runs close to the jail and dominates its boundary wall, has been repeatedly flagged as a major vulnerability. Officials revealed that over half a dozen incidents of suspected material being thrown into the premises have taken place over the past two years, yet no significant measures—such as raising the roadside wall—have been undertaken.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case under relevant sections of law, and investigations into the recovery are underway.
