Over the past 12 years, Jammu Airport has made significant strides in infrastructure, passenger amenities, and air connectivity. According to airport authorities, there has been a remarkable increase in the airport’s capacity, facilities, and operations compared to 2014. Once the new terminal building becomes operational, the airport’s annual passenger capacity will reach 5 million (50 lakh).
Devendra Yadav, Director of Jammu Airport, stated that approximately 60 percent of the construction work on the new terminal building is currently complete. The target is to make it operational by the end of this year. Once functional, it will provide passengers with modern amenities and significantly boost the airport’s capacity.
He noted that in 2014, Jammu Airport’s annual passenger capacity was around 1 million (10 lakh), a figure that has now risen to 2.6 million (26 lakh). Meanwhile, the terminal building’s area has expanded from 7,000 square meters to 14,500 square meters. Upon completion of the new terminal, the total area will reach approximately 40,000 square meters.
Aircraft parking capacity at the airport has also been increased. While there were previously parking stands for seven aircraft, that number has now risen to 13. Following the runway expansion in 2021, the operation of large aircraft like the Airbus A-321 has also become possible.
Facilities such as aerobridges, free Wi-Fi, DigiYatra, and special assistance for differently-abled passengers have been provided for traveler convenience. Several modern amenities, including six aerobridges, are being developed within the new terminal.
To strengthen security, advanced surveillance systems, under-vehicle surveillance systems, and integrated perimeter security systems have been installed. Additionally, facilities such as a domestic cargo terminal, helicopter parking stands, and a solar power plant have been developed.
Jammu Airport is also fully prepared to handle the surge in passenger traffic during the Amarnath Yatra. Airport authorities state that there is currently sufficient additional space available relative to the existing capacity. Meanwhile, the proposed civil airport in Udhampur is expected to further strengthen regional air connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
