Jammu-Kashmir Rains: Incessant rainfall over the past two days has caused the Jhelum River to cross the danger mark of 25 feet at Sangam in Anantnag and Pampore, prompting the authorities to issue a flood alert. The downpour has claimed the lives of two people, left dozens stranded and prompted the closure of major highways.
According to the officials, the water level at Sangam rose above the danger mark of 25 feet, while at Pampore, the river also flowed beyond the critical threshold, heightening the risk of flooding in several low-lying areas. In Srinagar, the Jhelum River was nearing the alert mark of 18 feet at Ram Munshibagh.
The Irrigation and Flood Control Department has said that water gauges across the region are rising rapidly and warned that it will continue to do so if the rain persists. “All the concerned authorities are requested to remain alert and take necessary measures…All officers assigned flood duties must immediately report to their posts,” the department wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Continuous rainfall in Jammu since Tuesday evening has created a flood-like situation, prompting authorities to issue a flood alert and advise residents to stay away from water bodies.
Heavy Rains Cause Rivers To Swell In Kashmir; Rescue Ops Underway
Heavy rains have led to flooding in several south Kashmir districts, including Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam. Police and disaster management authorities have launched rescue operations, and emergency helplines have been activated in vulnerable areas.
In the Garkhal village of Akhnoor, at least 40 people were trapped after the Chenab River rose four feet above the evacuation level. SDRF and police teams have been deployed to rescue those trapped.
Continuous rains over the past few days have triggered landslides and led to the closure of several major routes. Following multiple landslides between Udhampur and Banihal, the all-weather Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was shut for the second consecutive day. Apart from this, the Mughal Road, the Jammu-Srinagar-Leh highway, and the Jammu-Kishtwar highway were closed for traffic movement.
Schools and colleges across the Kashmir division were closed on Wednesday due to bad weather. “In view of inclement weather conditions, schools and colleges across the Kashmir division shall remain closed today, on 03.09.2025,” the official notice read.
