Politics has heated up over the ‘red category’ industrial units operating in the Battal Ballian Industrial Estate in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. During a discussion on the issue in the Assembly, local MLA RS Pathania strongly demanded the closure of these units, despite the government’s stated compliance with regulations.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary informed the House that four red category industrial units are operating on approximately 51.7 kanals of land in the Battal Ballian Industrial Estate. These units provide employment to approximately 172 people. He clarified that all units are operating with equipment installed in accordance with pollution control standards and their emission levels are within the prescribed limits.
According to the government, these units are being regularly monitored by the Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee to ensure compliance with environmental standards. They also stated that any industrial unit is permitted to operate only if it meets all environmental regulations and guidelines.

However, MLA RS Pathania strongly objected to this, stating that these red category units are having a serious impact on the health of local residents. He stated that residential areas and a women’s college are located around the industrial area, which could affect thousands of people. He demanded that the government close these units within a specific timeframe.

Meanwhile, the government also revealed that a closure order has already been issued against one of the red category units, M/s Super Refineries, for violating pollution control standards.

The issue is no longer limited to the environment and health, but has taken the form of a debate about employment and development versus public health. The entire region is keeping an eye on what concrete steps the government takes in the coming times.
