The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jammu and Kashmir unit will celebrate June 25th as “Constitution Murder Day” across the Union Territory. Special programs will be organized in various districts and divisions to highlight the impact of the Emergency imposed in 1975 on democratic institutions, civil liberties, and fundamental rights.
BJP leader Advocate Chandra Mohan Sharma stated this during a press conference at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar. He stated that June 25th is a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy, as it was on this day in 1975 that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency.
Advocate Sharma stated that the purpose of observing Constitution Murder Day is to make citizens, especially the younger generation, aware of the events of that period and the impact it had on democratic values. He said that during the Emergency, freedom of expression was curbed, political opponents were jailed, and attempts were made to weaken democratic institutions.
He said that the BJP would raise awareness about the importance of protecting democracy and the Constitution through seminars, symposia, exhibitions, and public awareness campaigns across Jammu and Kashmir.
On this occasion, Advocate Sharma also paid tribute to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, one of the founding leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, on his martyrdom day. He said that Dr. Mukherjee was a strong supporter of Indian nationalism and made the supreme sacrifice for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Dr. Mukherjee’s ideas continue to inspire the unity and integrity of the country.
Earlier, a tribute program was organized at the BJP headquarters on the martyrdom day of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Senior party leaders and workers, including BJP National General Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir in-charge and Rajya Sabha member Tarun Chugh, State BJP President and Rajya Sabha member Sat Sharma, participated in the program.
Leaders paid tribute to Dr. Mukherjee by laying a wreath on his portrait and remembered his contributions. Speakers said that Dr. Mukherjee’s life was a symbol of national service, sacrifice, and dedication, and that his ideals will always guide the countrymen.
BJP leaders said that through the celebration of Constitution Murder Day and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s Martyrdom Day, the message of democratic values, national unity, and respect for the Constitution will be conveyed to the people.
