The central government has taken a major step towards making Ladakh a carbon-neutral state. Thirty-three new electric buses have been approved for Leh and Kargil districts under the Prime Minister’s e-Bus Service Scheme. The introduction of these buses will strengthen the public transportation system in Ladakh and promote environmental protection.
Electric buses have been operational in Ladakh since 2023, but the addition of the 33 new buses will provide even better convenience to the public. According to officials, these buses are expected to be delivered within the next month. Each bus will be 7 meters long and has been designed keeping in mind Ladakh’s difficult terrain, high altitude, and difficult roads.
The new buses will provide affordable and convenient travel options for local residents and will also provide better public transportation facilities to tourists visiting Ladakh during the tourist season. It is believed that this will facilitate access to remote areas of Leh and Kargil.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena welcomed this decision and thanked the Central Government. He said that this decision will prove to be important in developing an environmentally friendly and sustainable transport system in Ladakh. He said that the administration is continuously working to provide better connectivity to the people while protecting the fragile ecology of the region.
The Lieutenant Governor said that the operation of electric buses will reduce carbon emissions and also reduce dependence on fuel. He said that this initiative is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making Ladakh a carbon-neutral region.
