Major tragedy averted in Gulmarg: 184 tourists safely rescued after 9-hour operation

Panic erupted late Monday evening in Gulmarg, a world-famous tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, when a sudden technical fault halted the gondola service mid-air, leaving 184 tourists stranded in several trolleys. Following the incident, teams from the administration, police, army, and the SDRF immediately responded, and after a massive rescue operation lasting nearly 9 hours, all tourists were safely evacuated. It’s a matter of relief that no tourist was seriously injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the weather was normal that evening, and a large number of tourists were taking the gondola ride to enjoy the beauty of Gulmarg. A technical malfunction suddenly occurred in the system, leaving several cabins suspended in mid-air. Fear and panic gripped the stranded tourists. Many families were carrying small children and elderly people on the trolleys, making the situation even more sensitive.

Upon receiving information about the incident, teams from the district administration, police, and army arrived at the scene. The rescue operation also involved the SDRF and technical experts. Using modern equipment, ropes, and specialized safety techniques, the personnel safely lowered each tourist down one by one. Officials maintained a close watch on the situation throughout the night.

According to sources, the Chief Minister’s Office and Police Headquarters continuously monitored the entire incident. Senior administrative and police officers maintained constant contact with the teams on the scene to ensure the rescue operation was not hampered.

According to officials, preliminary investigations suggest a technical fault. A team of experts is now conducting a detailed inspection of the entire gondola system to determine the exact cause of the malfunction. As a precaution, the gondola service has been temporarily suspended.

This incident brought back memories of the tragic 2017 Gulmarg Gondola accident, which resulted in the deaths of seven people due to strong winds and a technical problem. However, this time, a timely rescue operation averted a major tragedy.

Following the incident, tourists and locals praised the bravery and promptness of the Army, Police, and SDRF personnel. The administration has stated that tourist safety is a top priority and that security and technical surveillance will be strengthened to prevent such incidents in the future.
