Taking strict action against child marriage in Udhampur district, a joint team of police, the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), the Child Helpline, and the District Task Force achieved a major success. The team rescued a 14-year-old minor girl from forced marriage in time.
The operation was carried out in the MH Road area of Udhampur district after a confidential tip-off received by the Child Helpline revealed that a minor girl was being forced into marriage. Upon receiving the information, teams from the relevant departments immediately arrived at the scene and stopped the marriage.
It is noteworthy that despite the Udhampur administration and police having already issued a strict advisory against child marriage, the marriage rituals continued. Officials intervened on the spot and rescued the girl safely.
On the recommendation of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the girl has been declared a “child in need of care and protection.” Keeping her safety and well-being in mind, she has been transferred to a child care home.
The entire operation was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Saloni Rai and District Social Welfare Officer Udhampur Kanika Gupta.
Officials clarified that child marriage is a serious crime and no one involved in it will be spared.
The administration has also appealed to the general public to immediately inform the Child Helpline or the police if they come across any information about child marriage, so that the future and rights of the children can be protected.
