People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has sharply criticized the policies of the US and Israel regarding the ongoing situation in Iran. She appealed to the people of Iran to understand the alleged conspiracies of external forces and maintain unity.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar on Friday, Mehbooba Mufti said that America has a history of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries. Under the pretext of democracy and human rights, it actually seeks to seize those countries’ natural resources, which is unjustifiable under any circumstances.
Referring to Gaza, she said that innocent people are being openly tortured there, but the US is maintaining silence. This raises the question of whether America’s attitude towards human rights is limited only to its own interests.
Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the demonstrations in support of Iran after Friday prayers in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in Kashmir, saying they were a sign of public awareness. She also urged the Iranian leadership to take seriously the public grievances behind the protests and address them.
The PDP president warned that if the Iranian people fail to understand the policies of the United States and Israel, the situation could become like that of Syria. She also stated that the United States and Israel are not true friends of any Muslim country, but are only interested in oil and other resources.
Speaking on India-Iran relations, Mehbooba Mufti said that previously, voices of support for Iran were raised across the country, but in the current political climate, people have become afraid to register their protest.
Regarding the students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in Iran, she stated that she has spoken to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and requested special flights for their safe return.
