People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed ur Rehman Para on Tuesday introduced an adjournment motion in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, demanding an immediate discussion on the rising hate crimes against Kashmiri students and workers in various parts of the country. Calling the issue of “urgent public importance,” he appealed for the House to postpone all listed business and allow a debate on it.
Parra, the Pulwama MLA, said that in recent months, there have been consistent reports from several states that Kashmiri students and workers have faced harassment, threats, assault, and social boycott based solely on their identity. He stated that Kashmiris are being targeted in hostels, rented accommodation, factories, hotels, and small workplaces, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
Identity-Based Harassment
In his adjournment motion notice, Para stated that these incidents have instilled fear among thousands of Kashmiri youth who have migrated from Jammu and Kashmir for education and employment. He stated that these circumstances are directly affecting not only students and workers, but their families in Jammu and Kashmir are also constantly worried about the safety and dignity of their children.
A Question of Fundamental Rights and National Integration
The PDP MLA emphasized that this issue is related to the fundamental rights to life, liberty, equality, and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution. He warned that if concrete action is not taken in time, it could seriously harm national unity and social harmony.
Incidents Continue Despite Assurances
Para stated that despite assurances issued from time to time by the administration, such incidents continue to occur, indicating that existing systems are inadequate and largely reactive.
Demand for strict action and security arrangements
Through an adjournment motion, the MLA demanded that concrete measures be taken to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students and workers across the country, strict action be taken against those involved in hate crimes, and that helplines, nodal officers, and safe housing be established in sensitive areas. He also appealed for immediate intervention by the central government and the concerned state governments.
Para said that given the seriousness of the matter, it should be discussed in detail in the Assembly without delay and should not be postponed due to daily legislative work.
