Rail Journey to Mata Vaishno Devi Set to Become Even Safer; Katra Track Infrastructure to be Upgraded at a Cost of ₹238 Crore

JNM Correspondent Hardeep Jamwal, Jammu

A major relief and piece of good news has emerged for the millions of devotees traveling on the Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra rail section. Indian Railways has sanctioned substantial safety and rehabilitation works worth ₹238 crore to enhance the safety and structural integrity of this vital rail route.

The project, approved by the Railways, encompasses slope stabilization in sensitive hilly terrains, the repair of tunnels and implementation of anti-seepage measures, the strengthening of bridge safety, and various other essential technical improvements. This initiative is considered particularly significant given that millions of devotees arrive in Katra every year to pay their obeisance at the shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that this project underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable rail connectivity across some of the country’s most challenging terrains. He noted that these works were sanctioned following a comprehensive technical evaluation of the cuttings, tunnels, and bridges, with the aim of ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of this rail section.

According to reports, the Jammu–Katra rail section has historically faced numerous challenges, including difficult terrain, fragile geological conditions, and adverse weather patterns. The Railways is frequently required to exercise heightened vigilance due to incidents involving heavy rainfall and landslides. In this context, the newly sanctioned safety works are expected to make the journey for passengers even safer than before.

Railway officials are confident that, following the implementation of these modern safety measures and rehabilitation works, this route will emerge as a far more robust and secure corridor than ever before. This will not only facilitate smoother travel but also further bolster the confidence of the devotees.
