An undertrial prisoner from Jalandhar, Punjab, lodged in Anantnag district jail in South Kashmir, has died. The deceased has been identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of Gandhi Camp, Jalandhar. He was in judicial custody in a case registered under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act.
According to officials, Sunil Kumar’s health suddenly deteriorated late Friday night. The jail administration immediately rushed him to the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment. However, despite the best efforts of doctors, his life could not be saved and he died in the hospital.
The administration has taken the matter seriously and initiated legal proceedings. Officials say that the necessary investigation is underway to ascertain the actual cause of death. Action has also been initiated under Section 194 of the Indian Penal Code (BNSS).
According to sources, the cause of death will become more clear after the post-mortem report is released. Currently, the administration and relevant agencies are investigating all aspects of the case.
Meanwhile, officials have stated that it would be inappropriate to reach any conclusions until the investigation is complete. Further information regarding the case is awaited.
Meanwhile, in another tragic incident in the Kashmir Valley, Aruja Tariq, a woman who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident in the Nowgam area of Srinagar, also succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital. Police have also initiated an investigation into this case.
The death of an inmate in Anantnag jail has once again raised questions about the health facilities and monitoring systems for inmates. However, the administration maintains that all prescribed procedures were followed and immediate medical assistance was provided when the inmate’s condition deteriorated.
