The Night… That Changed Barsala Forever

January 5, 1996: A Quiet Night Turned into Fear
The evening of January 5, 1996, was like any other in Barsala village. People were in their homes on a cold winter night. Everyday conversations between families, the voices of children, and a normal atmosphere reigned.
But between 7 and 8 p.m., the situation suddenly changed.
A group of armed men, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, entered the village. Initially, the villagers mistook them for security forces, but the situation soon became clear.
Villagers Gathered
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers forced several villagers out of their homes and gathered them in one place. These included teenage boys. The villagers were involved, including the breadwinners of many families.

The villagers had no idea what was about to happen.

Attack and Loss of Life

This incident was a profound shock for the entire village, shattering the social fabric of Barsala.

The Scene the Next Morning

and some wives lost their spouses.

Who were the attackers?
Who supported them?
Why were innocent villagers targeted?
While similar incidents occurred in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990s, many incidents like Barsala still await full justice and clear answers.
Security Measures After the Incident
Following such incidents, efforts were made to strengthen security in the Doda region. As part of this initiative, organizations like “Village Defense Groups” (VDGs) were established in villages to enable local residents to contribute to their own security.
However, this also raises the question of whether ordinary citizens should take responsibility for their own safety.
A Pain Alive in Memories
Even today, the people of Barsala remember this incident. This memory is not part of any grand platform or publicity, but lives on as a quiet tribute at the local level.
