A New Chapter in Agriculture in the Mountains: A 110-Kanal Potato Hub Being Built in Sarthal (BANI)

A major step towards agricultural development is underway in Sarthal, a hilly region of Kathua district. A modern potato seed farm is being developed on 110 kanals of land, which will not only provide high-quality seeds to farmers in the future but will also establish the region as a new hub for agritourism.
This picturesque area, adjacent to the Bani-Bhaderwah road, is often hampered by snowfall during winter, but construction has picked up pace as the weather has cleared. This farm, being developed under the supervision of the Agriculture Department, will produce the ‘Kufri Badshah’ variety of potato seeds, which are in high demand in the market.
This project, costing approximately ₹10 crore (approximately ₹10 crore), is being completed in three phases. Approximately ₹2.88 crore (approximately ₹28.8 million) has been released so far, enabling rapid progress in the construction of buildings and other basic works. Construction of the manager’s office, watchman’s room, and farmhouse is underway at the farm. In the coming phase, an open café, a bridge, vehicle parking, and a one-acre live demonstration facility will be developed.

The geographical location of Sarthal is considered highly favorable for this project. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level, this area lies on the leeward side, where the climate is suitable for potato seed production. The ample sunlight and low risk of disease will contribute to high-quality seed production.

Experts believe that this project could play a significant role in compensating for declining seed production in other areas of the state. Especially in Nathatop, Sarthal Farm could prove to be a major relief for farmers, especially amid declining production due to nematode disease and adverse weather.

This project will not only promote seed production at the government level, but will also provide advanced technology and better seeds to the surrounding farmers, potentially increasing their income. Additionally, tourists visiting Sarthal and Bhaderwah will be able to visit this farm to understand modern farming methods and enjoy the open-air café being developed here.

Overall, this potato seed farm being developed in Sarthal is emerging as a new model of the confluence of agriculture and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, which will play a vital role in giving a new direction to the region’s economy in the future.
