Amidst the scorching heat, power demand in Jammu division continues to set new records. In many areas, people are experiencing power outages of three to six hours during peak hours. According to the Power Department, the peak power demand in Jammu division has currently reached approximately 1,700 MW, putting immense pressure on the supply system.

GP Singh, Managing Director of Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL), said at a civil society dialogue event in Jammu that significant work has been done to strengthen the power distribution system in the past few years. He explained that while power losses were previously very high, they have now been reduced to approximately 26 percent. The department’s target is to reduce this to 20 percent, compared to the national average of 12 to 15 percent.

He stated that providing uninterrupted and quality power to approximately 1.25 million domestic consumers in the Jammu division has become a major challenge. Due to increasing demand, load management measures are being implemented in many areas. The department stated that power theft, meter bypassing, illegal hooking, and non-payment of bills are also placing additional burden on the system.

During the program, officials stated that the power network is being modernized under the Central Government’s Revised Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Special emphasis is being placed on smart metering, improved billing systems, and grievance redressal services. Rooftop solar systems are also being promoted under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana (PMGSY) to reduce pressure on the traditional power system.

Former DGP and Chief Vigilance Commissioner Kuldeep Khudda stated that power distribution and consumer satisfaction are among the most critical issues today. He emphasized the need for a simple mobile app and transparent services for consumers. Meanwhile, BR Sharma, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Branch, stated that while power services have improved, many areas still require continued modernization.

With the increase in heat, the demand for electricity is expected to increase further in the coming days, hence people do not seem to get relief from power cuts at present.
