NEET Paper Leak: Why is the country’s biggest exam repeatedly under scrutiny?

JNM Journalist Hardeep Jamwal, Jammu

The country’s most prestigious medical entrance exam, NEET, is once again at the center of controversy. Amid allegations of paper leaks and the activeness of investigating agencies, the biggest question that arises is how a question paper for such a major and high-security exam gets leaked? Is it merely the work of a few brokers, or is there deep-seated collusion within the system?

Every year, millions of students work tirelessly to fulfill their dream of becoming doctors. Many families sell land, take out loans, and fund their children’s coaching. But when news of question papers being sold in the market before the exam begins, it is a major setback for students who have prepared diligently.

According to experts, paper leaks are not considered a common occurrence in any national-level exam. The entire process, from question paper preparation to printing, transportation, and delivery to the examination center, is highly confidential. This raises the question: where is the flaw?

Based on the initial actions of investigating agencies and the pattern of previous cases, there have been suspicions of a multi-level network behind the paper leak. Questions have been raised about the role of printing presses, transportation chains, examination centers, technical staff, coaching mafia, and even local brokers. In several cases, it has also been revealed that question papers were made available for substantial sums of money just hours before the exam.

Education experts believe that the growing “coaching market” for competitive exams is also impacting the entire system. Success in medical and engineering entrance exams is no longer just about studies, but also about businesses worth crores of rupees. In this context, paper leak gangs exploit the helplessness of students and parents.

The most worrying thing is that every time a paper leak occurs, investigations, arrests, and statements are made, but the matter cools down after some time. Perhaps this is why such networks become active again.

The big question now is: if the suspicion of a question paper leak is true, should the exam be cancelled? Because on one hand, there are millions of honest students who have worked hard, while on the other, there are those who allegedly manipulated the system by paying money. How can fairness be ensured in such a situation?

Many students and parents say that if the paper was indeed leaked, the exam should be re-conducted to ensure equal opportunities for all. Meanwhile, some experts believe that repeated exam cancellations increase mental stress and uncertainty, which impacts students’ futures.

Another major question in this matter is regarding political and administrative accountability. Despite so many claims of security in the country’s most sensitive examinations, why do reports of irregularities emerge every now and then? Is technical monitoring inadequate? Is such a large-scale paper leak possible without internal collusion?

The need today is not just to arrest the culprits, but to thoroughly review the entire examination system. Unless every process, from question paper preparation to the examination center, is fully transparent and accountable, it will be difficult to restore student confidence.

Because this is not just a matter of one exam, but of the dreams of millions of youth who want to make their future through hard work.
