Banihal’s Identity Goes Beyond Tunnels; New 100-Foot Landmark Set to Become a Major Attraction

Hardeep Jamwal, JNM Journalist, Jammu

Banihal, known as the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir, is set to acquire a new identity. A massive “BANIHAL” landmark—standing approximately 100 feet tall and inspired by the famous Hollywood sign—has been installed in the area and was inaugurated by local MLA Sajjad Shaheen. Completed ahead of the Shri Amarnath Yatra commencing on July 3, this new landmark will welcome pilgrims and tourists traveling along National Highway-44.

Constructed on a hillside slope, this colossal sign features a robust steel structure and utilizes modern technology. It is equipped with an automatic lighting system, ensuring visibility from a distance at night and making it a focal point of attraction for travelers.

The local administration believes that this landmark will serve as more than just a decorative structure; it will become an enduring visual identity for Banihal. It is expected to boost tourism in the region while simultaneously creating opportunities for local businesses and employment.

Since its inauguration, locals and tourists alike have been flocking to the site to take photos and selfies. Images of the landmark are also being widely shared on social media. Residents note that while Banihal was previously known for its tunnels and natural beauty, this new landmark will give a fresh direction to the region’s branding.

During the Amarnath Yatra, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims will travel through this route toward the Kashmir Valley. Consequently, this grand “BANIHAL” sign is poised to become a symbol of welcome for travelers and a memorable part of their journey.

It will be interesting to see how significantly this new landmark boosts tourism and the positive impact it has on the local economy in the future.
