Power outages are adding to the hardships of residents in Jammu amid the harsh winter. Nearly every area of the city is experiencing daily outages of three to five hours, causing significant inconvenience. On one hand, the cold has confined people to their homes, while on the other, the intermittent power supply has rendered essential appliances like heaters and blowers useless.
The situation remained similar on Thursday. Power supply was disrupted for three to six hours in various areas from morning to evening. Trikuta Nagar, Preet Nagar, and surrounding areas experienced power outages from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., followed by outages for 45 minutes at around 10:30 a.m. and an hour at 12:00 p.m., followed by another outage for a quarter of an hour in the evening.
Power cuts occurred at various times in most areas, including Gangyal, Kunjwani, Chhanni Himmat, Chauadi, Sainik Colony, Sunjwan, Narwal, Gandhi Nagar, Satwari, Naya Basti, Talab Tillo, Bohri, Pauni Chak, Janipur, Ban Talab, Sarwal, Rihadi, and the old city.
Due to the lack of electricity, cold protection equipment is not working. Local residents Raj Kumar, Vishal Sharma, Rumel Singh, and Bishambar Das questioned why Jammu faces long power outages when Srinagar receives uninterrupted power. They alleged that despite paying their full bills, the people of Jammu are being harassed the most.
The electricity department claims that the lack of rain and snowfall has significantly lowered the water table, reducing hydroelectric power generation by approximately 70 percent. According to officials, this compulsion is the reason for the power cuts.
