On the 127th birth anniversary of Brigadier Rajinder Singh—revered as a symbol of unparalleled valor and sacrifice in the history of Jammu and Kashmir—demands for conferring the nation’s highest honors upon him have once again gained significant momentum. Representatives from the Army, the administration, veterans’ groups, and various social organizations paid heartfelt tributes to Brigadier Rajinder Singh at a ceremony held at the Tiger Division War Memorial in Jammu.
Speakers at the event recalled how, in 1947, when Pakistan-backed tribal raiders launched an assault on Jammu and Kashmir, Brigadier Rajinder Singh confronted thousands of invaders with a force of merely 100 soldiers, successfully stalling their advance toward Srinagar for several days. This courageous stand bought the Indian Army the crucial time needed to reach Srinagar and defend Kashmir.
Speakers noted that had Brigadier Rajinder Singh not confronted the enemy without regard for his own life at that critical juncture, the history of Kashmir might have unfolded very differently today. He played a decisive role in ensuring Kashmir remained part of India.
The event was attended by several senior military officers and dignitaries, including 99-year-old retired Major General Govardhan Singh Jamwal. Speakers reiterated the demand to upgrade Brigadier Rajinder Singh’s Maha Vir Chakra to the Param Vir Chakra, arguing that he deserves this honor in recognition of his extraordinary courage and sacrifice.
Additionally, demands were raised to confer the Bharat Ratna upon him, declare June 14 and October 27 as National Days of Remembrance, and incorporate the saga of his heroism into the national educational curriculum. The speakers emphasized that the nation’s younger generation ought to know how a valiant soldier played a historic role in saving Kashmir through his indomitable courage.
It is noteworthy that Brigadier Rajinder Singh was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra on December 30, 1949. He became the first recipient of a gallantry award in independent India. However, military experts and veterans believe that he has not yet received the national recognition commensurate with his contributions and sacrifice—recognition that is truly his due.
At the conclusion of the event, the attendees appealed to the Central Government to re-evaluate Brigadier Rajendra Singh’s contributions and accord him appropriate national honors.
