PDP Criticizes CM Omar Abdullah Over Remarks on Liquor Consumption in Jammu & Kashmir

Reported by Shriya Gupta

A fresh political debate has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah defended the government’s position on liquor sales by stating that “no one is being forced to drink alcohol.” His remarks, made during an interaction with media persons in Ganderbal, have drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, particularly the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Reacting strongly to the statement, PDP leader Iltija Mufti termed the Chief Minister’s comments “illogical” and accused the government of ignoring the emotional and religious sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She questioned the rationale behind the administration’s stand and said that the argument being presented by the government does not justify the continued expansion of liquor outlets in the Union Territory.
Iltija Mufti further stated that if the government believes liquor restrictions cannot be implemented because Jammu and Kashmir is home to people of different religions and communities, then the same logic should apply to states like Gujarat and Bihar, where prohibition laws are already in force. According to her, the government’s explanation lacks consistency and raises serious questions about its commitment toward protecting the social fabric of the region.
The PDP leader also alleged that the present administration is sending contradictory messages to the youth. On one hand, the government speaks about building a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir and runs awareness campaigns against substance abuse, while on the other hand, liquor sales continue to expand across various districts. She claimed that such policies weaken the larger fight against addiction and create confusion among the public.
The controversy began after Omar Abdullah responded to questions regarding demands for a liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir. While addressing reporters, the Chief Minister clarified that the government is not promoting alcohol consumption and that individuals who visit liquor shops do so voluntarily. He emphasized that people are not being compelled to consume alcohol and that the administration is maintaining a balanced approach on the issue.
However, the statement quickly triggered political reactions across the Valley, with several social and political groups expressing concern over the growing number of liquor outlets and their impact on society. Many organizations have also renewed demands for stricter regulations on alcohol sales, especially in areas with strong public opposition.
Political observers believe that the issue could intensify further in the coming days, as opposition parties are expected to continue targeting the government over matters related to public morality, youth welfare, and cultural sensitivities. The debate has once again brought the sensitive issue of liquor policy in Jammu and Kashmir into the political spotlight.
