Investigation into permanent settlements on forest land intensifies, controversy escalates over illegal encroachments in the Bahu area

The issue of permanent settlements built on forest land in the Bahu area of Jammu and the issuance of electricity and water connections has escalated. The administration has launched an investigation into the matter, and the Assistant Revenue Commissioner has been assigned the responsibility. In the coming days, a joint team from the Forest Department and the Revenue Department will demarcate the area and examine land records.

According to reports, the forest area between the Bawe Wali Mata Temple and the Mahamaya Temple has seen large-scale permanent construction in the past few years. Locals allege that where there were only a few huts, permanent houses have now been built and facilities like electricity and water have been provided.

According to administrative sources, the first meeting between Forest Department and Revenue officials was scheduled for Thursday, but could not be held due to some reason. The concerned departments will soon meet with the records and decide on further action.

The issue has also heated up the political atmosphere in the area. Led by BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa, local residents protested and demanded the removal of illegal encroachments. The protesters stated that encroachments on forest land are increasing and the administration should take immediate action.

Meanwhile, members of the Gujjar-Bakarwal community protested against the MLA, alleging that the issue is being given a communal twist. They stated that they have lived in the area for years, and that if action is to be taken against government land, similar action should be taken in areas like Bathindi, Rajiv Nagar, Gujjar Nagar, and Gorkha Nagar.

The local administration will now take further action after investigating the entire matter. Currently, questions are being raised about the construction and utility connections made on forest land in the Bahu area.
