The Jammu & Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe June 25 as “Constitution Murder Day” (Samvidhan Hatya Diwas) across the Union Territory. Special programs will be organized in various districts and divisions to highlight the impact the 1975 Emergency had on democratic institutions, civil liberties, and fundamental rights.
BJP leader Advocate Chandra Mohan Sharma shared this information during a press conference held at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar. He stated that June 25 marks a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy, as it was on this day in 1975 that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency in the country.
Advocate Sharma explained that the objective of observing “Constitution Murder Day” is to apprise the citizens—especially the younger generation—of the events of that era and the impact it had on democratic values. He noted that during the Emergency, freedom of expression was curtailed, political opponents were imprisoned, and attempts were made to weaken democratic institutions.
He added that the BJP would raise public awareness regarding the protection of democracy and the significance of the Constitution across Jammu & Kashmir through seminars, discussion forums, exhibitions, and public awareness campaigns.
On this occasion, Advocate Sharma also paid tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, one of the founding leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, on his Balidan Diwas (Martyrdom Day). He described Dr. Mukherjee as a staunch proponent of Indian nationalism who made the supreme sacrifice for the complete integration of Jammu & Kashmir. He remarked that Dr. Mukherjee’s ideals continue to serve as a source of inspiration for the country’s unity and integrity.
Earlier, a tribute ceremony marking Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s Balidan Diwas was held at the BJP headquarters. Senior party leaders and workers participated in the event, including BJP National General Secretary, J&K In-charge, and Rajya Sabha member Tarun Chugh, as well as State BJP President and Rajya Sabha member Sat Sharma. Leaders paid floral tributes to Dr. Mookerjee and honored his memory, recalling his contributions. Speakers remarked that Dr. Mookerjee’s life epitomized service to the nation, sacrifice, and dedication, and that his ideals would continue to guide the people of the country.
BJP leaders stated that through the observance of ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day) and the death anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the message of respect for democratic values, national unity, and the Constitution would be conveyed to the masses.
