Years of hard work by an orchardist in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district have been undone by unidentified miscreants. In Hatipora village, located in the Behibagh area of the district, unknown individuals caused massive damage by cutting down and uprooting approximately 500 saplings from a modern high-density apple orchard. Preliminary estimates suggest the orchardist has suffered a financial loss exceeding ₹25 lakh.
Reports indicate that the affected orchard belongs to a local farmer who had invested heavily in a modern high-density apple cultivation project. This project was developed with the aim of boosting apple production in the region and increasing farmers’ income. However, this act by unidentified persons has dealt a severe blow to the farmer’s hopes.
The incident came to light when the orchard owner arrived at his farm and discovered that a large number of apple saplings had been deliberately cut down. The farmer and his family members were left shocked by the sight. As news of the incident spread, locals gathered at the scene and strongly condemned the act.
Local orchardists and villagers state that this is not merely a case of harming a single farmer but a matter of concern for the entire horticulture sector. People have demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and appropriate compensation for the affected farmer.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the police have registered an FIR against unknown persons at the Behibagh police station. Officials state that, given the gravity of the incident, an investigation has been launched, and efforts are underway to identify the culprits and bring them to justice.
Currently, there is an atmosphere of resentment across the region regarding this incident, and the farming community is looking to the administration for strict action.
