National Conference President and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, reacting to the recent state election results, clearly stated that in a democracy, the people’s verdict is supreme and must be respected under all circumstances. He said that the new governments in the states and union territories are expected to prioritize public welfare and development.
Speaking to reporters in Charar-e-Sharif, Budgam, Farooq Abdullah said that the people have given their mandate, and now it is the responsibility of the new governments to live up to the people’s expectations. He also said that the country belongs to everyone and it is important to work together for its progress, so that every section of the society has the opportunity to progress.
Regarding local elections, he said that the National Conference is ready for panchayat and municipal elections at any time. He emphasized that the formation of Panchayats at the grassroots level is essential to strengthening democracy. This will accelerate development in every village and region, and will also expedite the resolution of people’s problems.
Speaking on the development works in Charar-e-Sharif, Farooq Abdullah expressed concern that quality had been compromised in the Khanqah restoration and beautification project. He stated that changes were made to the project, which initially began, which affected construction and rendered some parts unsustainable. He appealed to the Waqf administration to expedite the project and immediately address any remaining deficiencies.
This statement by Farooq Abdullah is considered politically significant because, on the one hand, he emphasizes the paramount importance of the mandate in democracy, while on the other, he also advocates for strengthening the democratic structure at the grassroots level in Jammu and Kashmir.
