Jammu’s tourism landscape is rapidly transforming. Preparations are in the final stages to develop the artificial lake on the Tawi River into a major tourist destination. The upcoming Baisakhi is set to be special for Jammu, as it is planned to introduce motorboating and water sports on the lake, allowing tourists to experience a lake cruise similar to the one in Srinagar.
The Jammu Municipal Corporation and Jammu Smart City Limited have already conducted a successful trial of boating through the Tawi Boating Festival. During the trial, all aspects related to safety, operation, and water levels were examined, and were found to be satisfactory. Based on this, the process of making it permanent has now begun.
The experience will be similar to Dal Lake
Under the project, tourists will now be able to enjoy motorboat rides on the artificial Tawi lake, similar to Dal Lake. Jetboats, johnboats, skyboats, kayaks, and traditional Dal boats are being considered for operation in the lake. The administration says that only boats that are completely safe and environmentally friendly will be operated.
Tenders in February, Baisakhi Target
According to officials, tenders will be invited in February. Priority in the tender process will be given to local youth of Jammu and Kashmir to provide them with employment opportunities. Considering the approximately 45-day process required under regulations, efforts are underway to begin motorboating by Baisakhi, while informal operations are expected from March.
Tawi River Front to Become a New Tourist Hub
The second phase of the Tawi River Front project will develop commercial and recreational facilities around the lake. This includes the construction of a shopping mall, restaurants, a cineplex, parks, and green areas. Additionally, plans include the construction of a Waste to Wonder Park, a botanical garden, and two small artificial lakes in the Bhagwati Nagar area. The entire project will be developed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Boating Festival Boosts Confidence
The participation of thousands of people at the recent two-day Tawi Boating Festival indicated that if boating and water sports are resumed permanently on the lake, it will give a new impetus to tourism in Jammu. The opening of the barrage after the festival returned the Tawi River to its normal flow, but this event highlighted future prospects.
Statement from Officials
According to Dr. Devansh Yadav, CEO of Jammu Smart City Limited,
“The trial of boating in the artificial lake has been successful. It will soon be launched permanently. Modern facilities for tourists, along with private motorboats, will be developed, giving Jammu a new identity on the tourism map.”
Overall, this initiative to develop the Tawi artificial lake as a tourist destination will not only transform Jammu’s image but also create new employment and self-employment opportunities for local youth. If the plans are completed on time, the upcoming Baisakhi could prove to be the beginning of a new chapter in the tourism history of Jammu.Srinagar-like scenery now awaits Jammu, with preparations underway for motorboating on Tawi Lake.
