Jammu. Public passenger vehicle fares in Jammu and Kashmir are set to increase again after nearly five years. A cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah approved an 18 percent increase in fares for buses, minibuses, autos, and other commercial passenger vehicles. However, this new fare will only come into effect after an official government notification is issued.
According to information, the decision to increase passenger fares was taken in a cabinet meeting held on March 13th. However, before implementation, an SRO will be issued on the relevant file, followed by publication of the order in the official gazette. The Transport Department will implement the new fares only after publication in the gazette and issuance of the notification.
Fares will increase for the first time since 2021
It is worth noting that passenger fares in Jammu and Kashmir were previously increased by approximately 19 percent in 2021. Since then, diesel prices have risen steadily, vehicle maintenance costs, insurance, and other charges have risen significantly. Transporters say that considering current expenses, fare increases have become necessary.
Transporters Demand 40% Hike
Transport organizations had previously demanded a 40 percent fare hike. On December 23, a three-hour meeting was held between transport representatives and the government at the Civil Secretariat in Jammu regarding this issue. After a lengthy discussion, both sides agreed on an 18 percent increase.
Officials of the All J&K Transport Welfare Association say that while this increase is “a drop in the ocean” compared to rising costs, it will still provide some relief to transporters.
Proposed New Fares (per passenger)
Up to 3 kilometers: Increase from approximately ₹7.35 to approximately ₹8.50
Up to 5 kilometers: Increase from approximately ₹12.10 to ₹14
Up to 10 kilometers: Increase from approximately ₹15.20 to ₹18
Up to 15 kilometers: Increase from approximately ₹17.12 to ₹20
Up to 20 kilometers: Increase from approximately ₹22.20 to ₹25
The new fare list will be finalized and published in the Government Gazette. Only then will passengers traveling on buses, minibuses, and other public transport be charged the increased fare.
Direct Impact on Passengers
The fare increase will directly impact the pockets of thousands of passengers who travel daily on buses and minibuses. Especially working people, students, and daily commuters will now have to pay higher fares than before.
